Reflecting on Father

For me Father's Day comes and goes just as any other day of the week. Although I do think about my father on Father's Day.  My father passed 30 years ago. I was told growing up that I was the spitting image of my father.  Everyone in the little town in Louisiana where he grew up called him "Chip".  After he passed we would go to Minden to visit and people would say "laaawd, she looks just like Chip!"
I was a young girl when he died.  I remember when he died, I felt I had lost my best friend and that I had no parent that I could "connect" with.    Growing up, my mother was closest to my brother, because of his illness - he had cancer  I bonded with my father.  I sat on his lap and watched tv.  He would get me to pick bones that got stuck between his teeth while he ate fried fish.  I remember his mouth open as I went past the partially chewed fish and cornmeal to reach and pull the tiny bone out of his teeth.  I loved my dad and would do anything for him.  I enjoyed learning  Tak-Won-Do moves and how to swirl Nunchucks around from him, thinking I was sooooo tough .

I remember my dad use to love to listen to his Tina Turner albums in the basement.  He loved playing with his electric guitar and watching Star Trek .  I remember how helpful he was to my mother, helping her do the laundry, iron clothes, cook dinner - even though she often complained that he made the food to spicy for me and my brother.  My dad would even try to comb my hair to help my mother out on Saturday mornings.  I wore my hair in two ponytails parted down the middle.  He would brush my hair, and pull it into extremely tight ponytails that sat way to high on each side of my head .  When my mom saw it she said "Willie, you got her hair too tight! You gonna break her hair off."  I didn't care!  My dad combed my hair, and I loved it.

My dad could have been considered a little man, only 5'7, very thin and wore a size 7 shoe.  But, let me tell ya - he was only little in size! He smoked Marlboros and drunk Budweiser beer.  The man was rarely seen without his black leather jacket on - my dad was was tough as hell!  He was in the Army, served in the Infantry, as a nurse and his last duty was as a Drill Sergeant - he retired after 20 years of service .  He died 3 days after he retired.

It's been 30 years since I saw you last.  I wish you were here.  I will always love you!

  • Well, I had to break down and buy another Mac.  It was necessary to support my Mac formatted ipod.  I got a Ma.c mi.ni.  It well be used primarily as a music server.   I'm thinking about getting a M.ac Min.i installed in my car.  Of course I will have it professionally done (so I can blame someone if they f*ck up my car) so that it will be intergrated nicely into my dash.
  • My Bluetooth wireless headset sucks!
  • We went to B.arnes & N.oble this past weekend to look for books.  C got the prequel to the Da Vinci Code, Angels and Demons, T got The Notebook.  I got some raunch  the newest Zane novel.  Yeah, I know it won't help broaden my knowledge, but what the hell!
